Abstract
In this study, an advanced multilevel meta-analysis, combined with a systematic review, was employed to synthesize research findings pertaining to the impact of both positive (marital satisfaction, spousal intimacy, constructive conflict resolution) and negative (marital dissatisfaction, marital conflict, destructive conflict resolution) marital relationships on the psychological and social adjustment and maladjustment of children. The dataset for this research encompassed 99 theses and dissertations, along with 77 academic journal articles published in South Korea from 2010 to August 2022, totaling 176 primary studies. The findings of this study reveal that positive marital relationships, which include spousal intimacy, constructive conflict resolution, and marital satisfaction, collectively demonstrated a moderate effect size concerning children's psychological and social adjustment. Concerning maladaptation, marital satisfaction and spousal intimacy exhibited a moderate effect size, while constructive conflict resolution exhibited a very small effect size. Among the negative marital relationships, destructive conflict resolution and marital conflict displayed a moderate effect size concerning children's psychological and social adjustment, whereas marital dissatisfaction exhibited a small effect size. Regarding psychological and social maladjustment, only marital conflict and destructive conflict resolution exhibited a moderate effect size. Additionally, the study found that the age and gender of the child, as well as the publication year, exerted moderating effects, whereas the gender of the parents and the type of publication did not. Importantly, the results of the publication bias test indicated no issues in the outcomes of the current study. These findings provide support for the hypotheses within family systems theory, specifically, the spillover effect, reward effect, and emotional stability effect, with regard to the influence of marital relationships on children's psychosocial adjustment and maladjustment.
